More structural home fires occur in winter, so take care to prevent issues this holiday season.

The majority of home fires start in the kitchen, and holiday festivities prompt additional cooking that can increase your risk for an accident.

You can eliminate much of the danger by tidying up your cooking space. Create a 3-foot gap between your stove and any kitchen clutter. This will keep towels, cookbooks and other flammable items a safe distance from the heat and provide more space for food preparation.

While you're cleaning your counters, consider investing in a home inspection that can check your home's gas an heating systems for any potential issues. And stay tuned for more tips on preventing fires this season.
