Despite preventative measures, home floods during winter are common for many homeowners. While the damage caused by a flood can be traumatic, you'll want to keep a few safety tips in mind as you clean up the mess.

Because water conducts electricity, a few inches of liquid on the floor can be extremely dangerous. Never wade into standing water that could be electrified.

If you absolutely have to grab something from a flooded space, turn off power at the fuse box before venturing into the room. Ideally, wait to take stock of the damage until all the water has drained or evaporated.

A home inspection can identify the issues that lead to floods before they occur. Stay tuned for more information on how to handle winter flooding.
